Haining also suggested that in my view of the superiority of the defence, I was relying too much on the experience of the last war. He remarked - "History never repeats itself'" - a view which Liddell Hart rejectedJ9 When in late 1937 Deverell returned deeply impressed by the German army's manoeuvres, in which Panzer forces were employed for the first time on a large scale, his fate was sealed. 'SO The stupidity of the man became so obviously dangerous in the eyes of Liddell Hart and Hore-Belisha that they decided to get rid of him.

His Memoirs barely mention it. In his meeting with Daladier on 28-29 April 1938 Chamberlain justified the British policy of limited liability to the Continent by claiming that the power of the defensive in warfare had increased with modern methods and modern weapons; forms of attack previously thought of as irresistible, he argued, could now be met with a sufficiently organized defence. The official British historian who cites this wonders where Chamberlain found the inspiration for these views.

After 1940 Liddell Hart stressed that the Germans had applied the doctrine of armoured warfare which Fuller, himself and the other British armour pioneers had evolved from the 1920s. As we shall see, this was quite true. However, was not this fact much depreciated by Liddell Hart's loss of faith in the late 1930s in sweeping armoured offensives? Here, too, the answer is much more complex, and intriguing, than recent critics of Liddell Hart have allowed.
