This can’t be Loretta,” she said. She gasped for air, and Loretta’s nurse knelt in front of her and said, “Breathe, honey. ” But this was hard for Laura, who was closest in age to Loretta. Linda was already nine years old when Loretta and Laura came in quick succession, with Lola three years behind. Her heart raced at 130 beats per minute, a sign that her immune system was starting to fight the toxins, but her elevated temperature and accelerated heart rate stressed her fragile system. By the next day, she had not improved. She was, in fact, getting worse. Her blood pressure plummeted, and even though she was receiving a massive dose of antibiotics, the infection continued to spread.
Wally, too, needed sleep, but he didn’t dare go home. He wanted to be near Loretta, so he rented a dorm-type room in a section of the hospital reserved for the patients’ families. His head was a tornado, a whirlwind of faces and facts that he needed to sort out. There was the ICU staff of doctors and nurses who buzzed around Loretta, and all the medications he thought he understood when they had been explained to him, but now he couldn’t remember their purpose or their perils. In addition, the infectious disease team kept popping in, trying to isolate the exact cause of her infection.
