At the end of the chain, remove all the blocks from the machine, cut the threads apart and you will have all your finished blocks ready to press and continue. Chain pieced units are connected by thread. SQUARING OFF THE BLOCKS Once your blocks are completed, check them to see if they are straight. If you have sewn carefully, there may be no need to trim your blocks at all. Squaring off is most easily accomplished with a large square ruler. Place the square ruler onto the block so that the upper-right corner of the block is aligned with the upper-right corner of the ruler.
The fastest way to do this is by chain piecing. When sewing units together to create blocks, you could sew one, pull it out of the machine, cut the thread and move on to the next. But this is not the most efficient way to piece these blocks. Chain piecing can save you time and thread. Chain piece units together. To begin chain piecing two units together, make a pile of the first unit all in the same direction. Repeat with a pile of the second unit. Position these next to your sewing machine so that they are in the correct positions to pick up, flip one on top of the other and sew together.
